Slice forehand

Description:
This video features USPTA Master Professional Bill Tym explaining the fundamentals of the slice forehand stroke. He covers the grip, stance, backswing, forward swing, contact point and follow-through.

Tip:

When the continental was the predominant grip among players, slice shots were very much a part of each rally. While the slice is still used in today’s game, it perhaps is not a primary shot. It is used to change the pace of a rally, return serve, approach and also as a defense mechanism.

If you look around the courts at your facility, you probably see the club members using the slice pretty often, especially when playing doubles. A lot of times they use it as a substitute for their topspin shots. If executed correctly, the slice can be very difficult to return due to its skid or low bounce, which creates different contact points for the opponent.

This week’s tip features USPTA Professional Bill Tym as he explains the progression of teaching a slice forehand. Help your players get a better forehand slice!
