Check out the video clip called “Sliding on Clay,” taken from USPTA’s “On Court” instructional DVD “Mastering the Dirt,” in which Master Professional Lorenzo Beltrame demonstrates drills used to teach players the proper strategy and tactics that work best on a clay court surface.

Tip:
As you well know, playing on a clay court surface is much different from playing on a hard court. Not only must a player change his footwork and movement, but the strategy and tactics used in a point will differ due to the typically slower speed of a clay court.

Tennisresources.com has a variety of helpful tips on how to help a player adjust to the different conditions presented by a clay court, including how to properly slide into a shot, how to develop an effective kick serve and developing pace. Simply go to www.tennisresources.com and enter the words “mastering the dirt” into the Quick Search field. There, you can find content that focuses on technique, drills and tips all related to playing on clay.
