Warming up before a match

Description:
In this video clip, USPTA Professional Wayne Bryan discusses three important factors to consider when warming up for a match: practicing on the court you will be playing your match on, using new balls and practicing every shot.

Tip:
Have you ever coached players who have a difficult time at the start of a match? Do they lose the first four to five games or the first set and then seem to improve as the match progresses? If this is the case, it is probably because they did not warm up properly.

The warm-up is the first and critical step in playing a good match. Please take a few seconds to ask yourself the following questions and see what your player needs to do in order to be prepared to start his or her match.

  1. Does your player arrive 10 minutes before the match starts and immediately jump on the tennis court instead of arriving at the court one to two hours early to be able to warm up?
  2. Before a match, does he or she warm up using used balls instead of brand new?
  3. Does he or she warm up practicing all the shots including first serve, second serve, as well as the other shots that will be used during the match?

USPTA Professional Wayne Bryan, father and coach of the world’s No. 1 doubles team, explains how important the warm-up period is for a player to play well during a match.
