The best age to start playing tennis

Description:
The video features USPTA Professional Mark Kovacs, Ph.D., and his perspective on the best age for kids to start playing tennis. Learn why he advocates an early start.

Tip:

This week’s tip features USPTA Professional Mark Kovacs, Ph.D., discussing the proper age for kids to begin playing tennis. He suggests starting them early and exposing them to tennis equipment. Allow children to play with tennis balls and later transition to throwing, chasing and catching to get them familiar and comfortable with sending and receiving skills. When these basic skills have been developed, the little racquets may be introduced and they can start learning about hitting and competition. It’s important to keep activities fun and entertaining.

The fundamentals kids learn at an early age will reflect later in their technique and mind-set. It’s our duty as teaching pros to equip our young students with the proper foundation upon which they will continue to build their skills and interest in the sport.
